Tottenham Hotspur Football Club has completed an important component in the construction of its new stadium.
Recent progress in the development next to the site of their former home White Hart Lane includes the completion of the compression ring, which sits at the back of the four stands and is responsible for holding the cable net roof structure. This is the final step before the roof structure is raised into place.
When raised, the roof cable structure will weigh 600 tonnes, and will be made up of 287 glass roof sections and 810 roof cassettes consisting of metal and acoustic panels facing the bowl, and a membrane facing the sky. The roof will feature 324 LED sports lights which will form the floodlighting for the stadium. There will also be a skywalk for visitors to climb and admire the views of London. The project, designed by architecture firm Populous, is due to complete this year, with Spurs set to start their 2018/2019 campaign in the 61,559 seater stadium in August. The fans in the 17,500 capacity first tier southern stand will be positioned just five metres from the goal line, which is closer to the pitch than at any other comparable size stadium in the UK. The proximity of the fans in this stand will create a ‘wall of sound’ that will add to the atmosphere of the ground, which will not only cater for football but incorporate a fully retractable pitch so that NFL games can also be played at the venue.
In addition to the stadium development, the site will also contain 579 new homes, a 180-room hotel, a local community health centre, a Spurs museum and club shop, an extreme sports facility and a sixth form college.
